Public education can only truly serve the public if the public is aware of the challenges and issues it faces.
In order to take action on educational legislative issues, one must first be aware of them. On its website, the National Education Association (NEA) keeps an updated list of all current bills being considered by Congress, as well as publishes all of their letters to Congress. On their site, you can find a Congressional Report Card, as well as sign up to be a cyber-lobbyist.
Bookmark the NEA site and check it regularly. Write letters to Congress when bills you care about are up for consideration.
