What does your religious, spiritual or philosophical tradition say to you about simplicity and poverty, especially related to holidays?
_________________________________________
I think of simplicity and poverty as wholly different things. Coming from a "poor" background, I haven't done much thinking about simplicity- my percieved deprivation of things/objects/experiences when I was young made me always want more, something I struggle with to this day.
I grew up in a Slavic european-American household where spending money was bad. Part of this was due to my parents living through the depression. Owning things was discouraged sometimes making one feeling evil to want something. Holidays were especially difficult having my father glower as we opened packages. To this day, I have great difficult in shopping especially in malls. I do better shopping for seedlings in the spring. I was raised Unitarian-Universalist and felt bad as the other kids went skiing and traveled widely. Being humble was not one of its goals.
